Wenge (Millettia Laurentii) is a very distinctive tropical hardwood. Its heartwood is a medium brown, with nearly black streaks. Upon application of a wood finish, (particularly an oil-based one) the wood can become nearly black. Its grain is straight with a very coarse texture.
Splinters from Wenge can take longer to heal and are more likely to go septic compared to other woods. It is on the IUCN Red List as endangered due to loss of habitat and over-exploitation.
