Yew (Taxus Baccata) has surprisingly hard timber for a softwood; its tight, fine grain and smooth texture give it a lustrous finish. The sapwood is usually a thin band of pale yellow or creamy colour; the heartwood is an orangey brown, sometimes with a darker brown or purplish hue. Colour tends to darken with age.
